A sealant is a resin (plastic) material applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The resin bonds to the depressions and grooves (called pits and fissures). The sealant serves as a barrier that protects tooth enamel from plaque and acids. Sealants are applied by cleaning the tooth and then placing an etchant (conditioner) on the tooth. A bonding agent is then used and the sealant is then applied to the tooth with a tiny brush applicator. Tooth anatomy varies from patient to patient and whereby some teeth have a relatively flat shape, some teeth have deep grooves and pits making it difficult to keep the tooth clean and a haven for food and bacteria.
Sealants are most often done when the 6 and 12 year molars erupt.
