Recently, the FDA recommended that silver not be used in pregnant women or children. The advantage to using composite is its improved bond strength to tooth structure although its durability has not caught up to that of silver. When large fillings need to be placed, the material of choice is porcelain. Porcelain fillings take longer to do and are more expensive than composite fillings but are more durable.

The debate between silver (amalgam) versus tooth-colored (composite) fillings is still prevalent today. Although few offices use silver on a regular basis, it has for many years done its job.
